Motorboat & Yachting: RYA members can get £8 off tickets to the London Boat Show, where the RYA will be running its Active Marina Experience workshop.
With a little over two months to go until the 2015 London Boat Show (9-18 January), the RYA has started to firm up its plans for the Excel Centre boating extravaganza.
The boating organisation has confirmed that its members will be able to get an £8 discount on the standard and preview day entry price of £20 per adult. For 2015, the RYA will be exhibiting on stand D016, where showgoers can get advice and information about all aspects of boating.
Next year’s show will also see the return of the Active Marina Experience workshops, which offer top tips from expert instructors and a chance to refresh your boating knowledge. Finally, the RYA members’ lounge will also be continued, with the Platinum Suite offering an exclusive area for members to relax with a drink and escape the crowds.
Advance tickets for the 2015 London Boat Show are on sale now, starting at £10 per adult for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday tickets. Under 16s go free and concessions are available for over 60s and group bookings.
Motorboat & Yachting: Peters & May is turning its boat shipments pink as part of a new charity campaign – Breast Cancer.
Boat shipment company Peters & May is hoping to turn the docks pink with its latest charity campaign. The Pink Lashings project will see boats delivered with coloured straps to show their owner’s support for Breast Cancer Clinical Trials (BCCT).
Boat owners are being encouraged to add the pink lashings to their shipment in return for a £5 donation per strap, a sum that will be matched by Peters & May. The company estimates that this could raise as much as £500 a time, based on a shipment of an average-sized 80ft yacht.
The first Pink Lashings shipment, which set off from Palma last week and arrived in Fort Lauderdale on Monday (20 October), contained a 23-metre Leopard superyacht trussed up in the distinctive straps.
Dave Holley, CEO of the Peters & May Group, explained why he chose to team up with BCCT: “Breast Cancer Clinical Trials is a charity close to many people’s hearts, especially mine, having lost my mother to this terrible disease.
“The work they do has already led to some great achievements and we are excited to have come up with this innovative idea to help further the cause. We are confident that our clients will appreciate this opportunity to donate to such a worthwhile cause.”

Motorboat & Yachting: With only a few days to go until the world’s largest on-water boat show gets underway, we round up the debutants. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show gets underway next week (30 October – 3 November), and to the uninitiated it can be quite daunting.
More of a boat city than a boat show, FLIBS is the largest on-water event of its kind in the world, with $4billion (£2.5billion) worth of boats on show across more than three million square feet of exhibition space. It’s so large that the organisers lay on water taxis to help showgoers get between each of the seven zones.
This costs an extra $10 per head, on top of the standard adult admission price of $24. Children aged 6-15 pay just $9 each and under 5s go free. A $2 per head discount is available for those who book their tickets online.
With so much to see at the show, Motor Boat & Yachting has crawled through the exhibitor list to pick out the exceptional boats that you won’t want to miss.
Motorboat & Yachting: Finnish pilothouse specialist Sargo has announced that it will be revamping its 31-footer with a debut at Dusseldorf Boat Show early next year.
Sargo has announced that it will be unveiling a new-look version of the 31, which has undergone a “refined facelift”. The 31-ft pilothouse model will get its public debut early next year at the Boot Dusseldorf show (17-25 January), the Finnish manufacturer added.
Described as a “sport utility boat”, the Sargo 31 promises “gracious and comfortable” 40-knot cruising, as well as some “fascinating novelties”. Quite what these are remains to be seen.
Two designs have been released (pictured above), suggesting that buyers will be given the option of a blue hull with white topsides or a black hull with a black hardtop. Exterior alterations are subtle, with the single skylight replaced with three smaller ones that are fitted side-by-side.
Prices are yet to be confirmed, but Sargo claims that the range will retain its reputation for “great value for money”. The Sargo brand was launched earlier this year as a replacement to Minor Offshore, and the parent compant has been building boats in the Finnish town of Kokkola since 1967.
Motorboat & Yachting:The Spanish government’s decision to roll out a matriculation tax exemption has boosted the local charter market.
The market for charter boats in Spanish waters has doubled since the beginning of the year, according to Charter & Dreams. Pressure from the yachting community led the Spanish government to drop its 12% matriculation tax on charter vessels over 24m, as we reported last year.
Twelves months later, Charter & Dreams estimates that twice as many charter boats are now operating in the region than in 2013.
Judith Estrella, owner of Charter & Dreams, said: “Before the tax exemption, only 15 yachts over 24 meters were operating in Spain. “This summer, this figure was doubled and next summer we expect this number to triple, meaning that we’ll have approximately 50 superyachts with licenses to charter in Spain.”
Introduced in 2009, the Spanish matriculation levy on charter boats was the only such restriction in the Mediterranean. It is hoped that the exemption will tempt charter skippers back to Barcelona, the Costa Brava and the Balearics.
Motorboat & Yachting: Swiss lakes are seeing an increasing rate of outboard motor theft, according to a survey by news agency ATS.
Boatowners in Switzerland should be on their guard against outboard motor theft, local police have warned. This comes after a survey revealed that an increasing number of boats are being targeted on Lake Constance (as pictured). The lake, which borders Germany and Austria, has seen a 137% increase in outboard motor theft over the past two years, according to a survey by local news agency ATS.
In 2012, 35 outboards were stolen, but this number has risen to 85 for the first nine months of this year alone. The cheapest models taken cost around 1,000 euros (£792), while the most expensive engine stolen was worth almost 15,000 euros. Local police have claimed that the crimes are being carried out by organised groups, who later sell on the engines in Eastern Europe.
Speaking after the conviction of a 26-year-old Romanian, prosecutor Bernhard Schöni told ATS: “In that case it wasn’t possible to find any accomplices, even though we believed that he couldn’t have acted alone.”
Possible anti-theft measures suggested by local police include fitting padlocks and taking photos of the engine’s serial number to prove ownership.

Motorboat & Yachting can reveal the first photos of the Lagoon 40 Motor Yacht. Hot on the heels of the Lagoon 630 launch at Cannes, the French catamaran producer has released the first images of its 40 Motor Yacht. Like the 630, it is based on an existing sailing cat model from the Lagoon range, this time the 39.
It’s a simple case of removing the rig, replacing it with a radar mast, upping the horsepower and away you go. Whereas the 630 could be an intimidating leap into the world of two hulls thanks to its sheer enormity, the 40 Motor Yacht manages to pack four cabins and bathrooms into what is still a relatively compact footprint.
Being based on a preexisting model the deck layout is pretty rigid with a spacious cockpit aft and plenty of space to stretch out on the webbing that spans the bow. The raised helm position is a telltale of the sailing origins and, as with the wind-powered version, this is your only helm position.
This does free up space the saloon where a dinette and galley share the space and plenty of light from large, square screens. We are yet to be issued with a formal press release, therefore details are thin on the ground, but small power cats are a rare commodity so the Lagoon 40 Motor Yacht should be a welcome addition.
Motorboat & Yachting: Scotland Boat Show last weekend at Kip Marina brought in more than 13,000 visitors and saw a 10% rise in visitors.
The 2014 Scotland Boat Show enjoyed a 10% increase in visitors, with the grand total in excess of 13,000, it has been confirmed. The three-day event at Kip Marina, which ran from 10-12 October, featured RIB and dinghy taster sessions in association with Seatech training and RYA Scotland, respectively. Other attractions included fresh local produce, a range of classic cars and a flyboarding demonstration on the water.
Key exhibitors included Sunseeker Scotland, who brought a San Remo across from Loch Lomond, and Broom Boats, who travelled from Norfolk to make their Scotland Boat Show debut with two models displayed.
Kip Marina brokerage Michael Schmidt & Partner reported that 80% of those who booked a viewing at the show we’re newcomers to the market. And the first sale of the weekend was recorded at 10:30am on the Friday morning, when a Hanse 325 sailing yacht was sold for £90,000.
Show organiser Kevin Blumire told MBY that the local market for powerboats is on the rise. He adds that 75% of exhibitors have already expressed an interest in attending the 2015 show, which will be expanded to include a fourth pavilion, dedicated to food and drink.
This year’s Scotland Boat Show was tied in with the Scotland Homecoming campaign, which celebrated a busy summer for Scottish tourism, with both the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup hosted north of the border. And Kevin believes that this had a positive impact on visitor numbers at the show, with visitors flocking from further afield than ever before, including a record Irish contingent.
Motorboat & Yachting: Southampton docks are home to some truly huge ships, but last night the South Coast port played host to an exceptionally large visitor. Royal Caribbean’s 1,181ft cruise ship has docked in the UK for the first time.
Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, docked in Southampton for the first time yesterday (15 October). The 1,181ft ocean liner is twice as large as any previous cruise ship to dock in the UK, and she drew a crowd of hundreds of locals hoping to catch a glimpse.
Her 16 decks make for an air draft of 236ft, which is twice the height of the Boat Show Eye Ferris wheel at last month’s PSP Southampton Boat Show.
It was only a fleeting visit, however, as the Royal Caribbean megayacht departed at midnight, bound for Florida. Launched in 2009, Oasis of the Seas is a truly staggering vessel, composed of 500,000 different components and capable of 22 knots.
More than 6,000 passengers can be accommodated on board, as well as 2,200 staff, and with this in mind, it’s hardly surprisingly to learn that there are 25 restaurants to choose from.
Entertainment options at sea includes a mini-golf course, basketball court, two wave simulators, high-speed internet, and a theatre playing the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats. A sister vessel with the same dimensions and features, Allure of the Seas, is due to be launched by Royal Caribbean in May 2015.

Pratical Boat Owner: Britain’s influential yacht designer David Thomas has died. Earlier this year, the Royal Southern Yacht Club hosted its first David Thomas regatta in celebration of the yacht designer, who had been a member of the club for 25 years. Now tributes are pouring in for the UK’s most prolific keel boat designer.
The main speaker was PBO contributor Peter Poland, a long-standing friend of David’s, who built many of his designs as co-owner of Hunter Boats. He said: ‘David has an instinctive understanding of what sailors want – he has been the Pied Piper of yacht designers, that’s his secret.
‘People from all divisions of sailing have sailed out on a David Thomas design. They will go on for ever. He is also responsible for the largest one-design fleet in Round the Island Race history, 105 Sigma 33s, a record that will never be beaten.’
The Royal London Yacht Club on Cowes, Isle of Wight also run an annual David Thomas-inspired regatta. Tim Bennett said: ‘The UK’s most prolific (and probably the best), keel boat designer has died.
‘He had the knack of combining brilliant designs with an uncanny insight into understanding what sailors really wanted from their boats. ‘And he was a nice guy. Sail on David.’
